What It Really Means to Be Born Again: A Biblical Perspective
Church Attendance Doesn’t Equal a Relationship with God
Just because someone goes to church doesn’t mean they have a personal relationship with God. In fact, many Americans identify as “born again,” yet their beliefs often contradict core biblical truths.
A recent poll revealed that:
28% of self-identified born-again Christians believe Jesus sinned.
One-third think being a good person is enough to get into Heaven.
Clearly, there’s confusion about what it truly means to be born again.
Jesus Said, “You Must Be Born Again” (John 3:7)
Jesus spoke these powerful words to Nicodemus, a Pharisee and respected religious leader. Despite his devotion and knowledge of Scripture, Nicodemus lacked something essential: a transformed heart.
Who Was Nicodemus?
Nicodemus was:
A Pharisee who took God’s law seriously.
A leader in Israel, possibly a household name.
Moral, educated, and religious—but spiritually unfulfilled.
He visited Jesus at night, likely out of fear of public scrutiny. Yet his curiosity led him to the truth.
Jesus Redefines Spiritual Life
Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as a teacher from God. But Jesus challenged him with a radical truth:
“Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” — John 3:3 (NKJV)
This wasn’t about religion or good deeds. It was about spiritual rebirth—a transformation only God can bring.
What Does It Mean to Be Born Again?
The term “born again” has been misunderstood and misused. But Jesus made it clear: Being born again is a spiritual transformation through the Holy Spirit.
“Unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” — John 3:5 (NKJV)
Just as we can’t see the wind but feel its effects, we can’t see the Spirit—but we see the evidence in changed lives.
The Gospel in One Verse
Nicodemus asked, “How can these things be?” Jesus responded with one of the most well-known verses in the Bible:
“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.” — John 3:16 (NKJV)
This is the heart of the gospel: God’s love, Jesus’ sacrifice, and our response of faith.
Are You Truly Born Again?
You might relate to Nicodemus—religious, moral, even successful. But none of that guarantees eternal life. One day, you’ll stand before God alone. What matters is not your achievements, but your relationship with Jesus.
Jesus doesn’t just want your admiration. He wants your heart. He said:
“Follow Me.”
God’s Plan for You Is Good
God isn’t a cosmic killjoy. He has a purpose for your life:
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you… thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope.” — Jeremiah 29:11 (NKJV)
You were created to know God. And His plans for you are better than any plans you have ever thought of for yourself. Commit your life to Him and discover what He has for you.
