How to Overcome the Power of Sin

All of us would like to be more deeply committed followers of Jesus than we are right now, but we struggle. We struggle with certain sins and it seems like as soon as we have the upper hand, they come back to haunt us again. Sometimes you feel like you take one step forward and three steps back. The struggle goes on and on, and you wonder, “Am I ever going to be free from this struggle again?”

Know this: you can overcome sin!

Practical Principles

  1. If you want to win the battle with sin, you need to admit your struggle. Admit you’re under its power. Admit you’re carnal. Admit there’s no human solution; only God can deliver you.
  2. You do not have to be carnal if you don’t want to be. We will have times of compromise and failure, but to habitually live in a carnal state is a choice.
  3. The old nature knows no law; the new nature needs no law. If Jesus has taken up residence in your heart, you have his enabling to obey the commandments.

Relevant Reminders

  • Like David, you’ve got to face your giants. You’ve got to call them out. You have to cut their heads off. You do this with God’s help.
  • The Christian life is not a playground; it’s a battleground and conversion has made our hearts a battlefield.
  • We all love to blame things, people, and circumstances.

Applicable Actions

You don’t have to be a slave of sin. You can live in the victory that Jesus has purchased for you at the cross. There’s no power you still need to be under. No addiction that needs to control your life. No lifestyle you can’t break free from.
