You Reap What You Sow

There are laws that govern our universe, like Newton’s Law of Gravity, which basically says, “What goes up must come down.” There is the Law of Thermodynamics that tells us that all things are breaking down. And then there’s the law of sowing and reaping, found in Galatians 6:7–8, that says, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap” (nkjv). But the law of sowing and reaping is both positive and negative as we see in the story of Esther.

Practical Principles

  1. God is always present and at work in our lives as Christians, whether we feel Him or not. God was at work in the life of Esther, He was at work in the life of Mordecai, and He was at work in the lives of the Jewish people. And we see how God worked through ordinary human events, like insomnia, the reading of a book, the anger of a man, and the timing of events.
  2. God can take impossible situations and turn them around for His glory. As Gabriel said to Mary, who would be the mother of Jesus, “With God nothing will be impossible” (nkjv). In Esther, God changed what looked like an impossible situation for the Jewish people and turned it around for their good.
  3. You will reap what you sow. Reaping can be a positive or a negative. For Haman, he reaped the treachery, deceitfulness, envy, and hatred that he sowed, and then was hung on his own gallows. Mordecai’s faithfulness, honesty, integrity, and Esther’s willingness to lay her life down were rewarded.

Relevant Reminders

  • If you sow to your flesh, you’ll reap corruption or deadness; that’s negative. But if you sow to the spirit, you’ll reap everlasting life, which is positive.
  • God is at work in your life right now. You don’t see Him. You might not feel Him, but He’s at work. He’s working behind the scenes, making all things work together for good to those that love Him and are the called according to His purpose.

Applicable Actions

As you look back in your life, you’ll find some who pursued fun when you pursued faith. Some pursued parties, and you pursued prayer. Some pursued sexual pleasure; you pursued sexual purity. Some pursued this world; you pursued the next. And while others reap corruption or deadness, you’re reaping life. So sow to the Spirit. Put God first in all things. Every day, from the moment you get up to the time you go to bed, fill your mind with the things of God, and sow to the Spirit. You will not regret it.
