What Is Heaven Like? Common Questions Answered.

Have you ever felt a longing you couldn’t quite explain? 

Like birds, we have a “homing instinct.” We too have a desire to go to a place we’ve never been before. Of course, that place is called Heaven.

Deep inside, we all long for something more. The Bible puts it this way, “[God has] has planted eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11 NLT). 

But what exactly is Heaven like? 

Is Heaven a Real Place?

There are countless opinions about the afterlife. Philosophers speculate. Movies imagine. Culture invents its own versions.

But if we’re going to learn what Heaven is truly like, we should listen to the One who came from it. Jesus said, “I have come down from heaven…” (John 6:38 NKJV). 

And He spoke about Heaven not as a theory, but as a reality He personally knew.

What Is Heaven Like According to Jesus?

In Luke 20, He was confronted by a group called the Sadducees. They did not believe in the resurrection, or life after death. And hoping to trap Him, they presented a complicated hypothetical story about a woman who had been married multiple times:

Then Jesus was approached by some Sadducees—religious leaders who say there is no resurrection from the dead. They posed this question: “Teacher, Moses gave us a law that if a man dies, leaving a wife but no children, his brother should marry the widow and have a child who will carry on the brother’s name. Well, suppose there were seven brothers. The oldest one married and then died without children. So the second brother married the widow, but he also died. Then the third brother married her. This continued with all seven of them, who died without children. Finally, the woman also died. So tell us, whose wife will she be in the resurrection? For all seven were married to her!” (verses 27-33).

Their question was designed to mock the idea of Heaven. Essentially, they were saying, “Oh, you believe in life after death? Well, if all seven brothers rise from the dead, who will she be married to on the other side?”

Instead, Jesus used the moment to reveal the truth of what awaits believers.

Death Is Not the End for Anyone

Many wonder: What happens when I die? Is that the end? Do I simply cease to exist?

In Jesus’ response to the Sadducees, He points out God is not the God of the dead but of the living. See, a believer never dies—their soul lives on. Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die…” (John 11:25-26 NKJV). 

But whether you’re a Christian or not, everybody is immortal in one sense. The Bible teaches that every person will live forever somewhere. So the question is not whether you’ll live after death or not—the question is where. For Christians, that place is Heaven.

Will Our Bodies Be Resurrected?

 But what about these bodies of ours? Will they be resurrected? The answer is yes. Jesus says in Luke 20:35, “…In the age to come, those worthy of being raised from the dead will neither marry nor be given in marriage” (NLT). According to Scripture, your body will be resurrected again. It’ll be brought back from the grave.

Job declared, “…in my flesh I will see God; I myself will see him with my own eyes” (Job 19:26-27 NIV). 

Will Our Bodies Be the Same as on Earth?

Heaven brings something different. We will receive glorified bodies that are perfectly suited for eternity.

Think of it this way: a scuba diver feels awkward walking around on land carrying tanks, weights, and equipment. But once underwater, everything functions exactly as intended.

In the same way, our future resurrection bodies will be perfectly designed for the environment God has prepared for us.

Will We Recognize Our Loved Ones in Heaven?

We will still be ourselves, only glorified. If we recognize people here on earth, why would we not in Heaven?

Yet, one of the questions people ask often is if we will recognize our loved ones in Heaven. The answer is yes.

Do We Become Angels When We Die?

But what about angels? Will we become angels when we die? Short answer: no. The Bible does not teach this.

Angels are unique beings created by God for specific purposes. They worship Him, serve Him, and carry out His commands.

And while Jesus said believers will be “like” the angels in certain ways (see Luke 20), He never said we will “become” one of them.

In fact, human beings occupy a special place in God’s creation. We are made in the image of God. This privilege angels do not possess in the same way.

 So we’re different from angels. They are a separate creation altogether, and we don’t become one when we die.

Will We Remember Our Earthly Lives?

 Sometimes people suggest we won’t remember anything that happened on earth when we enter Heaven. But this is actually a very unbiblical idea, and I have no idea where it derives from. The truth is you will remember things from earth when you are in Heaven.

For starters, we have this verse from 2 Corinthians: “For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad” ( 5:10 NKJV). That process itself requires remembrance.

And the Bible also talks about receiving a crown of righteousness: “Finally, there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will give to me on that Day, and not to me only but also to all who have loved His appearing” (2 Timothy 4:8 NKJV). 

Heaven is not spiritual amnesia.  It’s not like you’re going to be wondering, “What’s this for? My faithfulness on earth? Oh, I don’t remember anything about earth.”

We will remember our earthly lives, and therefore why those rewards were received.

Will We Be Married in Heaven?

Every married person wonders if they will remain so in Heaven. Jesus addressed this directly in Luke 20. Marriage, as we know it on earth, will not continue in Heaven.

As Randy Alcorn explained in his book, Heaven, earthly marriage is a reflection or shadow of the ultimate and true heavenly marriage between Christ and the Church. Randy also states, “God’s plan doesn’t stop in Heaven and the New Earth, it continues. God doesn’t abandon His purposes. He fulfills them. Friendships and relationships begun on earth will continue in Heaven richer than ever.”

 So whatever bond you have now will be greater, but it won’t be the same as it is now.

The Answer to “What Is Heaven Like?”

What is Heaven like? Heaven is not a myth, a state of mind, or a vague spiritual existence. It is a real place, a real destination, and the home every human heart ultimately longs for. It is where we will experience real and perfected relationships, with God as well as those we love.

Physical death is not the end. Every person will live forever somewhere. But the question is not whether you will exist after death, but where: Heaven or Hell. 

You decide in this life where you end up in the afterlife.
