The Man of Pain

by Greg Laurie on Apr 13, 2010

Maybe we can understand, at least partly, why Jesus had to die on the cross. But why did He have to suffer?

Indeed, He did suffer, far beyond our limited comprehension. God can, of course, do whatever He wants to, so long as it’s consistent with His character.

So if you were God, would you suffer if you didn’t have to? Why would you choose to suffer?

One answer seems to be, “So we will recognize that we serve a God who knows what we’re going through.”

Are you suffering? Maybe you feel as though you are the only person going through this painful circumstance.

You need to know that you’re not alone in your pain. It was for good reason that Jesus was called the Man of Sorrows, or literally, the “man of pain.”

Are you in pain right now? No matter how great your difficulty or need, know that He understands.

Jesus suffered and died to show you how much God loves you.

Long before America became a nation, a young evangelist named George Whitefield stood in open fields and town squares proclaiming a bold message: You must be born again. His preaching helped spark the First Great Awakening and shaped the spiritual foundation of a generation.

The powerful new film A Great Awakening brings this remarkable true story to life with compelling performances, rich historical detail, and a timely reminder of what God can do when people respond to the gospel.
