One area of Christian art that has, in my opinion, made significant strides in recent years is filmmaking. I’m amazed at the increase in quality we’ve been seeing in that industry. It used to be that the vast majority of Bible-based films were either blatantly inaccurate or extremely “cheesy.” You couldn’t help but wince as you watched them. But that’s not necessarily the case anymore.
A particular work that has caught my attention is The Chosen. This television series depicts the life of Jesus and His disciples so well! The acting, the dialogue, the scenery, and the emotion are all spot-on. As you watch, you really get swept into what’s happening.
The director and writer, Dallas Jenkins, is an evangelical Christian who has done a fantastic job of conveying Jesus and His disciples as real, down-to-earth people. They’ve got unique personalities like you and me.
Just recently, I got the opportunity to meet Jonathan Roumie, the actor who plays Jesus in the series. His portrayal of Jesus is the best I’ve ever seen on film. And his mastery of accents and voice talents blew me away; you’d never know his real-life accent is that of a New Yorker!
You can watch my conversation with him below:
One of the scenes that really stuck with me from The Chosen is when Jesus speaks with Nicodemus (played by Erick Avari). It wasn’t just two actors reciting verses from John 3. It was two real people having a real conversation about life-changing spiritual matters. I’ve preached from that text hundreds of times, but this scene really captured how I’ve always imagined it.
If you haven’t yet seen The Chosen, I want to make it available to you this month. We’re giving Season 1 of the series as a thank-you gift to those who donate to Harvest Ministries. If you’ve already seen the series, you know what a great conversation starter this would be if you gave it to a friend or neighbor to watch.
I recommend you not only enjoy it yourself but use it as an evangelism tool. During this time of year, people are more open to conversations about God than ever before. Why not share with them the greatest story ever told?
