Mama Stella speaks!

by Greg Laurie on Jun 5, 2008

We screened our film, Lost Boy: The Documentary, for the first time ever in front of one thousand pastors last night. There was a tremendous response and some really helpful insights that I think will really help as we get ready to premiere and release it.

Don’t forget, Lost Boy: The Documentary will premiere at Harvest Christian Fellowship on June 22, with more screenings in Florida and Montana. Click here and scroll down for all the details.

Two days left in Lost Boy Week on A New Beginning

Check out today’s A New Beginning radio program for today’s portion of Lost Boy Week. Among other things, you can hear my grandmother–the one I called “Mama Stella”–who is now in heaven.

Quenching the Holy Spirit

We have been talking about specific sins we can potentially commit against the Holy Spirit, who is God and thus has a personality and a will. We have looked at lying to and grieving the Spirit.

The Bible speaks of quenching the Spirit as well. This also applies to believers.

The apostle Paul exhorted the Thessalonians, “Do not quench the Spirit” (1 Thessalonians 5:19 NKJV). The thought of “quenching” suggests extinguishing a fire, like when you break camp and put out a fire.

So how would we quench God’s Holy Spirit?

One way would be through unbelief. This happened in Jesus’ hometown as the people questioned His authority. In Matthew 13:58, it reads, “He did not do many mighty works there because of their unbelief” (NKJV).

You limit the work of the Holy Spirit in your life by saying, “God could never use me!” And sadly, because of your blatant unbelief, He doesn’t.

You might say, “God would never answer my prayers!” And again, because of your unbelief that quenches His Spirit, He doesn’t.

Quenching the Spirit can occur when the Holy Spirit is leading you to do a certain thing, such as sharing your faith with someone, or taking a step of faith in a certain area, and you flatly refuse to do that.

Has God called you to serve Him with your life? Has He led you to do something? Are you doing it? If not, then you’re quenching the Holy Spirit.

You ever see those signs on the road that say “Yield”? That’s what we all need to do today. Instead of quenching the Holy Spirit through our unbelief, let’s yield to the Spirit.

May God bless and keep you all today.
