“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else” (Galatians 6:4 NLT).

I wish more young women understood this earlier in life:

You do not need to become someone else to be valuable.

You do not need to keep up to be worthy.

You do not need the world’s applause to walk in God’s favor.

God’s Purpose for You Never Changes

At 70 years old, I’ve lived long enough to watch the “cool thing” become the “not-so-cool thing” and eventually the “embarrassing thing.” Styles change. Opinions change. Culture changes every five minutes.

But God’s purpose for you never changes.

The Snare of Comparison

We are privy to more information about others than ever before. With a few clicks, we dive into an endless vault of different lives, each one showing only its best moments.

It’s true: Comparison is a snare. We compare our behind-the-scenes life against someone else’s highlight reel, and it traps us—either in inadequacy or pride.

My friend, neither of those comes from God.

How to Stay Focused on Your Own Life

The enemy loves distraction. If he can keep you staring at someone else’s lane, you’ll miss the beauty of your own calling.

“Pay careful attention to your own work, for then you will get the satisfaction of a job well done, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else” (Galatians 6:4 NLT).

Scripture reminds us: “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10 ESV).

Every Person Is Different

You were handcrafted by God, not mass-produced. You were never meant to copy someone else’s life. And, on the flip side, they were never meant to copy yours! So what is the point of comparing? It’s like asking an apple why it isn’t an orange!

It’s one thing to learn from others, to glean from the wisdom they’ve developed over years of experience. But comparing our journey to someone else’s distracts from the beauty of how God designed you and only you.

Psalm 139 says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made” (verse 14). You weren’t an accident. You weren’t just “thrown together.” You were designed with intention. God made you purposefully and wonderfully—your gifts, your story, your personality, even the quiet things no one else notices. He designed you specifically for the purpose He chose for you.

Think about each intricate piece of a puzzle. In a well-designed puzzle, each piece fits in one specific spot. Try to mix the pieces around, and they’ll never fit right.

“The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. . . . If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it” (1 Corinthians 12:12,17–18 NLT).

God Wants You to Live Your Own Life Faithfully

The older I get, the more freedom I find in this: God never asked me to be anybody else. He simply asked me to walk faithfully in the life He gave me.

And that is enough.
