Is ‘House of David’ Biblically Accurate? Here’s My Answer.

by Greg Laurie on Mar 13, 2025

Scripts Like House of David Aren’t 100% True to Scripture?

If you’ve ever watched House of David, The Chosen, or any similar, major Christian series, you know they take liberties with the stories—and they might be accused of not being biblically accurate.

But what do people mean by “biblically accurate”? The Bible is, needless to say, inspired by God, given to us by God, and it is a historical document—it isn’t written like a screenplay. So when people adapt biblical stories to the screen, sometimes these certain liberties are taken.

My view is that, if the message of the story is intact, and the core essence of the truth of the story is retained, it can be a very good thing. And I believe that is the case with Prime Video’s newly released House of David, an outstanding series which is rightfully making the rounds across media.

Some people have pointed out—and have an issue with—the opening scene of House of David where David’s running toward Goliath and Goliath throws a javelin. My response?

I think everybody already knows how the story turns out. But it’s the filmmaker’s job to put us on the edge of our seats—to give us a cliffhanger.

By the way, House of David inspired the special documentary series, Beyond House of David, where I take you behind the scenes of the show, interview some of the actors, and apply the captivating story of David to you, the person watching. Most importantly, we talk about how you can know the God whom David served. The first episode is now available on the Harvest+ app and Prime Video as a bonus to House of David:

New Christian Entertainment Allows the Chance for Biblical Conversations

For decades, Christian entertainment has maintained its infamy for a lack of quality production. If people were tuning in, it was to support, not to be entertained. But now we have faith-based and high-quality entertainment. This is truly a golden age for Christian films and biblical series.

Motion pictures like House of David, Jesus Revolution, and The Chosen are opening the doors for a national conversation about the Bible.

In fact, the New York Times just released an article titled, “The Streaming Rush to Turn Scripture Into Scripts.” People are talking about the Bible because of entertainment like this. Undoubtedly, these are evangelistic opportunities.

A New Form of Evangelism

So I would encourage you: Consider this series a form of evangelism. After the release of Jesus Revolution in 2023, we baptized over 4,000 people at what we called the “Jesus Revolution Baptism.” It was the largest baptism in American history. There was a definite cause and effect between the Jesus Revolution film and this event.

And now, House of David has the potential to reach 250 million people around the world! It is even ranking at #2 for the platform’s top 10 TV shows. Think about that: Who knows how many millions of people are going to hear this epic, biblical story of the life of David for the very first time because of this show?

Use These Opportunities for the Gospel and Teaching

House of David is probably one of the greatest evangelistic opportunities we’ve had in a long time. People are interested in it and want to talk about it!

Why not have a watch party in your house? Invite neighbors over, invite people to watch who aren’t yet believers. Then have a Bible study from the Scripture with the exact story intact. This can prompt the conversation.

Let’s take advantage of this opportunity we have and use it to have conversations about Jesus Christ!
