I Still Believe: An Interview with Jeremy Camp and Jon Erwin

by Greg Laurie on Feb 11, 2020

I had the opportunity to interview Jeremy Camp and director Jon Erwin on the film I Still Believe, based on Jeremy’s life story. Also told in his memoir of the same name, this is a beautiful—and true—love story about a very young Jeremy Camp.

We follow him through heartbreak and tragedy when he has to say goodbye to his young bride, Melissa, just months after their marriage.

It’s a riveting story of Melissa’s battle with terminal cancer, how God worked in the midst of it, and how Jeremy ultimately penned the song that has touched so many lives over so many years: “I Still Believe.”

Jon Erwin shares a little backstory on how he got involved in making this film:

After I Can Only Imagine, we were not looking, really, for another music movie. But we sat down with Jeremy . . . . We all sat down with him. And the story was so emotional and moving and beautiful. It’s just one of those great love stories, like The Fault in Our Stars, or The Notebook and I was so moved by it, I was crying after the interview that we just thought, this has to be our next film—the story was just that good.

‘I believe that God wants to use this’

Reflecting on how God has used his song, Jeremy Camp adds,

It’s very surreal, because, you know, you get to the point you’re like, “Hey God, what are you doing?” They’re still using this, and he’s like, “I want to use this to a greater scale,” so he’s been doing a lot of work in my heart, which is good for preparation because I believe that God wants to use this to change a generation. I believe that from the bottom of my heart.

There’s power in a story, and I know this is a story that will minister to your heart. Jon Erwin says it well: “A film could entertain you. The gospel could change your life.”

This film hits theaters March 2020, and you won’t want to miss it.
