Which Side Are You On?

by Greg Laurie on Nov 13, 2006
"And if it seems evil to you to serve the Lord, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord."

Like most young people in the late 60s and early 70s, I was looking for purpose and meaning in life. The thinking of the day was that we the young people would inaugurate a new era of love, brotherhood, and compassion for our fellow man. Or so we thought.

But after a little time in this pseudo peace movement, I began to realize it was the same old phony love and hypocrisy, the same old backstabbing and cheating, and the same old selfishness and emptiness of the generation that preceded ours and would follow ours.

On my high school campus, I was fortunate to have a very outspoken group of Christians who were not ashamed of the gospel. Out of sheer fascination, I observed them. Then I went to one of their meetings, where I heard the gospel and gave my life to Christ.

When I started hanging around these Christians, I met a few half-hearted individuals in their ranks, people whom I knew were trying to live in both worlds. Having sampled many things the world had to offer, I knew the futility and emptiness of it. Why would they try to live that way? It seemed so silly to me. And it still does.

Joshua’s words still ring true today: “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will
serve . . . ” (Joshua 24:15). As this world gets darker, we have to ask ourselves the question, “Which side am I on?” We need to make a choice. If we are on the Lord’s side, then it is time to get serious. It is time to make some changes. It starts with you, and it starts with me.
