What Are You Looking For?

What are you looking for in life? What are you living for? The reason I ask this question is that 2,000 years ago, Jesus asked it of some very inquisitive individuals, Andrew and John.

In the Gospel of John, we read the account of John the Baptist pointing to Jesus and directing his disciples to follow Him: “Again, the next day, John stood with two of his disciples. And looking at Jesus as He walked, he said, ‘Behold the Lamb of God!’ The two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus. Then Jesus turned, and seeing them following, said to them, ‘What do you seek?’ ” (John 1:35–38)

It is worth noting that this was the first question recorded in Scripture that Jesus ever asked any person. He said, first of all, “What are you looking for? What are you seeking?” And then He told them, “Come and see” (John 1:39).

We could ask the same question of people today. The answer some might give would be happiness. Others might say, “I am looking for success.” Even others might say, “I am looking to be loved.” And some might say, “I am looking for inner peace.”

You see, when those men came to Jesus on this day so many years ago, He was going to give them more than they bargained for. When He asked them, “What are you looking for?” that day, He got to the real need deep inside their lives. And He will do the same for you.
