Power in Worship

Something supernatural takes place when people worship, more than we may ever realize. Even the enemy’s power can be broken through worship.

I can think of times during our Harvest Crusades when I could almost sense a moment when something incredible happened. Something supernatural took place. Maybe suddenly a crowd moved a little closer to God.

It reminds me of the Old Testament story of King Saul, who was tormented by a demonic spirit. As a result, David was brought in to play his stringed instrument. As David would worship, God would inhabit His praises. And when David sang, the demonic spirit would leave Saul alone (see 1 Samuel 16:14–23). Something spiritual was happening in the process of worship.

We see the same principle at work when Jehoshaphat, king of Judah, discovered the Moabites were coming against him with a huge army (see 2 Chronicles 20). There was no conceivable way he was going to win. After he called the people together and prayed, he sent men out in front of his army to sing praises. (Would you have wanted to volunteer for that singing men’s chorus?)

But as the people went into battle worshipping the Lord, God confounded the enemy and caused them to destroy one another. The victory was Judah’s that day. God worked through the process of worship, and He prepared the way for what He wanted to do. So we see that God can use worship in a powerful way.
