Make Your Choice
Have you ever had one of those indecisive days? Usually I am decisive. But I get in those moods where I just can’t decide. I can be at the window of a take-out place and suddenly be stricken with indecision. That’s not so tragic at a take-out window. But when people are indecisive with God, it is a serious problem.
That’s how it was with Israel in Elijah’s day. For 85 years, the nation had gone back and forth between false gods and the true God. Not wanting to be responsible or live under absolutes, they would follow some other god. Then they would reap the results of following that god and would scurry back to the Lord and say they were sorry until their problems went away. Then they would go back like wayward children and do the same thing again.
Every time they were on the brink of destruction, God would be merciful and forgive them. One day, Elijah basically said to them, “Enough is enough. Make a choice. Which side are you on?”
Moses posed a similar question to Israel when they fell before the golden calf. He said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!” (Exodus 32:26). His successor Joshua challenged Israel to “Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve.” (Joshua 24:15). And in Matthew 12:30, Jesus said, “He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters abroad.” Jesus demands a response. He demands us to decide which side we’re on. Choose this day whom you will serve.
