From Generation to Generation

Through the years I’ve seen a lot of drama played out in real time in many lives. I’ve seen what happens to men and women who get married, stay married, and work on having a strong marriage and raising their children in the way of the Lord. Then their children have children, followed by great-grandchildren. I have seen what ultimately happens when God’s truth is passed on from generation to generation.

God said, “Honor your father and mother. Then you will live a long, full life in the land the Lord your God is giving you” (Exodus 20:12 NLT).

In the original language, the word used here for honor means “to give weight.” In other words, “Give weight to your parents.” As you are being raised by your parents, they will say things that you don’t like, such as “Do you think that I have a money tree somewhere?” and “When I was your age, you don’t know the sacrifices I had to make.” Then there is my favorite parental saying: “Because I said so.”

Sometimes we may look at God’s laws, standards, and absolutes and say, “I struggle with that. I don’t know about that. How can I know it is true?”

Yet God is simply saying, “You know it’s true because I said so.”

God is the source of truth. God is truth. So if God says it is true, then it is true. You may agree with it, or you may disagree with it. You may not fully understand it, but that doesn’t change what it is. I think it will all sort itself out in Heaven. Let’s just take God’s word.

Every family has its challenge and its tragedies. But in the end we’ll see the results of passing on His truth from generation to generation.
