Everyone Needs Jesus

by Greg Laurie on Sep 20, 2006
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

There are a few things we can know about every person walking this earth today. It doesn’t matter whether they are rich or poor, famous or unknown, young or old. Every person who is not yet a believer is basically empty, lonely, and guilty. And everyone is afraid to die.

Sometimes we think Christianity is for a certain type of a person. Before I was a Christian, I would watch people go to church, and I would think, I could never do that. I am not the churchy type. I just could not envision myself in that kind of a lifestyle, carrying around a Bible, praying, and living by what the Bible teaches. I thought, What a dull life.

But in time, I realized that I was the one missing out. I began to realize that the gospel is not for churchy people or for good people alone; it’s for all people. It’s for people on the top of the ladder and at the bottom as well.

In the Bible we see how two people from different backgrounds came to the same conclusion. You could not find two people who were more different. Nicodemus was known for his morality and his great accomplishments. He was respected and wealthy (see John 3). The woman at the well was known for her immorality. She was not famous, not respected at all, and she was poor (see John 4). But they both had something in common. Both were empty, and both needed Jesus.

Nicodemus shows us that no one can rise so high as to be above salvation, and the Samaritan woman shows us that no one can sink so low as to be beneath it. They are placed side by side in the Bible to show us that everyone needs Jesus.
