Eager to Serve

by Greg Laurie on Sep 7, 2007
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ.

When I was a new Christian, I would hang around at Calvary Chapel of Costa Mesa. I was 18 years old, and I wanted to be used by God. When the pastors would leave for lunch, I would sit in the church office, hoping that someone would call for counseling and that the secretary would assign the job to me. I was eager for any opportunity to serve.

One day, the associate pastor said to me, “Greg, we need you to do something for the church.”

I was ready. Preach the gospel to the ends of the earth? Pray for the sick?

“We need you to buy a doorknob.”

“A doorknob?”

It wasn’t what I expected, but I was excited. I was on a mission from God to buy a doorknob. It was a little job, but I was excited for the opportunity.

Are you excited for an opportunity to serve the Lord, even if it is a little one? Or does it have to be a big assignment? Then you won’t be called on. But if you are the kind of person whom God can call on to do a little thing, then He will give you big things to do later. The issue is not whether you are doing big things or little things. It is whether you are doing them for the Lord. Whether God says to me, “Go talk to that one person over there” or “Go preach to that multitude,” it doesn’t matter. Just the fact that He is directing me is enough in itself. I am excited that God would want to use me.

Is that how you feel? Then you are the kind of person God is looking for.
