All about Water
On His way back to Jerusalem, Jesus went through Samaria to meet a lonely, empty woman (see John 4:1–26). He got to the well before she did, and He waited for her. In the middle of the day, she came with her water pot. As she approached the well to draw water, she saw Him sitting there. She wondered, What is this all about?
When He asked her for a drink of water, she said, “How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (John 4:9). Jesus told her, “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water” (verse 10).
Immediately, she left her water pot to go tell the people in town she had met the Messiah. Her purpose in going to the well was to get water to drink. Instead, she found living water; she found a greater purpose.
And really, this whole conversation was all about water. She came for literal water, and Jesus offered her living water. Now, having found the water that satisfies the soul, she thought no more of her water pot. Just as Peter, James, and John abandoned their fishing nets and boats to follow Jesus, she abandoned her water pot and followed. They let go of the past and took hold of the hand of Jesus Christ.
If you are going to be the world’s friend, then you are going to be God’s enemy. You cannot live in two worlds. You need to let go of your water pot. Let go of the past, and drink of the living water.
