A Word to Single Christians

by Greg Laurie on Jun 23, 2018
Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

As a pastor, I will have people tell me they are not happy in their marriage because their spouse isn’t a Christian.

When I ask why they married an unbeliever, they say something along these lines: “He told me he was a Christian when we got married.”

My question is: Was there any evidence of it? Just because someone says they are a Christian doesn’t mean they are.

If you are a single Christian, what you don’t want to do is get involved with an unbeliever. Why? Because the Bible tells us in 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?” (NKJV). In most cases the unbeliever will pull the believer down, not the other way around. That is why it’s a trap and something we should avoid.

There are certain advantages to being single, and there are certain disadvantages as well. We’re told in 1 Corinthians 7, “An unmarried man can spend his time doing the Lord’s work and thinking how to please him. But a married man has to think about his earthly responsibilities and how to please his wife. His interests are divided” (verses 32–34 NLT).

Paul is not saying it is a bad thing to be married. He’s saying that when you’re married, you have to think of someone besides yourself.

That doesn’t mean you can’t still please the Lord, but it does mean that you will have limitations in your life that you didn’t have before. When you’re single, you’re mobile. And in many ways, you are free. Use your mobility for God’s glory. Use your time to serve Him and grow closer to Him. And pray for wisdom for that right person and that right moment.
