Protect Your Conscience

by Greg Laurie on Nov 9, 2019
Now the Holy Spirit tells us clearly that in the last times some will turn away from the true faith; they will follow deceptive spirits and teachings that come from demons. These people are hypocrites and liars, and their consciences are dead.

There’s something severely lacking in American culture today: shame.

We celebrate things we once were ashamed of. Everything is upside down. Right is wrong, and wrong is right.

Yet the Bible says, “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter!” (Isaiah 5:20 NKJV).

It seems that no one wants to be held accountable for their actions anymore. Today we’re a nation of victims. It’s never our fault, and we have no shame over things we do that are wrong.

I read an interesting article from Teen Vogue (I’m not a subscriber, by the way). It was about a group of pro-abortion comedians and performers who “use their art to raise awareness about the erosion of reproductive rights.” Their emphasis is on humor, and the message is, according to the writer, that “abortion can be funny.”

Really? Is that where we are now, where taking the life of innocent, unborn children is funny to some people? It seems as though we keep moving the goalposts, and it’s getting worse and worse. And when you think it can’t get any worse, it does.

I believe we’re being cheated by the daily barrage of social media we expose ourselves to. As author Michael Brown pointed out, “From violence-glorifying graphics on the big screen to incessant headlines of perversion on our news feed to the latest appalling video on our cell phone, we have become accustomed to the extreme, to the twisted, to carnage and to gore.”

The Bible warns that we can lose our sensitivity. But the good news is that Christ can resensitize our consciences. How? Let’s start by spending as much time in God’s Word as we spend on social media.
