What Does the Holy Spirit Do for Us?

by Greg Laurie on Oct 4, 2026

Do you remember that old Life Alert commercial? Those famous lines: “I’ve fallen and I can’t get up!” You push the button, and a live operator comes on the line to help you.

Wouldn’t it be great if we could have a little button like that? We press it, and God immediately shows up for a conversation. Because there are some moments where we really need help and just need to talk to Him.

Sometimes our friends can’t help us. Our family can’t help us. And we feel abandoned. Many people right now are even resorting to AI for companionship.

But we have Someone far greater than AI. The Holy Spirit knows what your next need will be,  and He is here for each of us. Even if His voice isn’t as obvious as an operator on the other end of the line.

Who Is the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit is not an “it.” He is not some impersonal energy, like the Force in Star Wars. He is the third person of the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

He was there at creation. When God said, “Let Us make man in Our image” (Genesis 1:26), the Trinity was conversing.

What Does the Holy Spirit Do in a Believer’s Life?

And He is our helper. Jesus told His disciples, “I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever” (John 14:16).

The Holy Spirit is far more involved in your life than you may realize. He brought you to Jesus, and He continues to work in you every day.

  • He  convinces us that we are children of God. “The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16).
  • He seals you. “you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise” (Ephesians 1:13). In ancient times, a king’s wax seal marked ownership. You essentially carry an ID tag that says, “Property of Jesus Christ,” and when the devil sees it, he backs off.
  • He is God’s deposit. Like a down payment, the Spirit guarantees our inheritance (Ephesians 1:14). God is saying, “I mean business.”  That makes us know it’s real.
  • He teaches you. “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you” (John 14:26). He illuminates Scripture as you read and hear it.
  • He helps you pray. When we don’t know what to pray, “the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26).

What Characteristics Does the Holy Spirit Possess?

The Holy Spirit has a personality. And Scripture shows He has the three marks of a person: intelligence, will, and emotion.

  • Intelligence: “ But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God.” (1 Corinthians 2:10).
  • Will: He distributes spiritual gifts “to each one individually as He wills” (1 Corinthians 12:11).
  • Emotion: He can be grieved, quenched, resisted, blasphemed, and even lied to.

Can You Resist the Holy Spirit?

The Holy Spirit’s role in your life is to awaken you to your need of Christ. “When He has come, He will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.” That’s what Jesus said in John 16.

He shows you your need for Christ. But you can resist Him, as Stephen told the religious leaders: “You always resist the Holy Spirit” (Acts 7:51).

And many people do this, unfortunately.

How Do I Respond to the Holy Spirit’s Call?

Do you feel like you’ve fallen and you can’t get up?

The Holy Spirit may be speaking to you right now, showing you your need for Jesus. The ball is in your court. Jesus died on the cross for your sins and rose again from the dead. He stands at the door of your life and knocks (Revelation 3:20).

If you’re ready to stop resisting and say yes to Jesus, you can pray something like this:

Lord Jesus, I know that I’m a sinner, but I know You are the Savior who died on the cross for my sin and rose again from the dead. I turn from my sin now, and I choose to follow Jesus Christ as my Savior and Lord from this moment forward. Thank You for hearing and answering this prayer. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
