The Unexpected Guest (by Cathe Laurie)

by Cathe Laurie on Dec 17, 2025

“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13 ESV).

The unexpected guest. Have you ever had one? Or even worse . . . have you ever been one?

It’s a feeling that’s hard to describe (and one I don’t like to relive!), knowing that the host was not at all prepared to see you arrive. You feel intrusive, like you’re invading a space that was not set to hold you.

As we approach Christmas next week, don’t forget: The world was unprepared for Jesus. Outside of a select few who knew He was coming, the world was, essentially, completely unaware. There was no red carpet, fanfare, parade, or news reporters to announce His arrival. In fact, there wasn’t even a room saved for Him (see Luke 2:6-7).

Of course, we know that most were expecting Jesus to ride in with armies, trampling down His enemies and declaring that He is Lord. Instead, He was born as a humble baby.

Are You Ready for Jesus’ Return?

But now, we know Jesus is coming again, and this time, He won’t be quiet about it (see 1 Thessalonians 4:16, Revelation 1:7, Luke 21:25-28)! The question is . . . will we be ready?

Friends, we know Jesus is coming again. And though we “know neither the day nor the hour” (Matthew 25:13 ESV), we know He is coming!

If Jesus were to arrive tomorrow—trumpets blazing, angels at His flanks, would you be prepared to meet Him face-to-face? If this idea stirs up trepidation or unrest in your heart, perhaps it’s something to pray through.

First, consider your relationship with the Lord. Are you close with Him? Do you feel Him near? If not, work to prioritize time with Him. Dive into Scripture. Spend more time in prayer. Bring Him into every moment of your day.

Second, consider your life. Is it honoring Christ? Matthew 25 gives us great examples of how to live like Jesus and love those around us. Consider your lifestyle, and what sins could be separating you from that closeness with the Lord. Ask Him to reveal to you what you may have missed. I encourage you to really dig in deep and be prepared to be uncomfortable!

Finally, consider who you know who needs to hear about Jesus. Our time is limited; we are never promised tomorrow. Who do you need to share the gospel with?

Friends, this is not a time to grow complacent! I pray that we continue to prepare every single day for when Jesus will return. Let us not be caught unawares and unprepared for His arrival! Instead, let us live our lives in the fullest service of Christ, so that when He returns, we will be ready!
